The smaller S-10 Blazer, at least the earlier years would make a great smaller overlanding platform. I personally have a 1978 K5 that I would love to turn into a rugged, more capable adventure rig, but the time and money investment would be huge. It doesn't have a heater or AC so any adventuring would be solo anyway. I think Chevy has a few capable vehicles, at OX14 there was a guy there with an 89 van he was overlanding in. I dont think that concerting it to 4x4 would be all that difficult at this point.
Hi EPCommander,
Strange that no one is really using the smaller blazers. I know they have an IFS front but so do Toyota and Nissan's and they are very popular in Australia.
The old K5 are awesome vehicles the us army used them for about 20yrs before the switched to the hummvee. I have a 79 Plymouth Trailduster which is the same as the K5. The roof is convertible from the windshield. I installed a full roll cage and a 8" lift with 1 ton axles dana 60 f dana 70 hd r. rebuilt the 360 motor and trans and added a part time kit to the T-case. Now I am working on the interior. It's a project but done over time so it doesn't soak up huge money. I think these vehicles should be kept alive as they are bad to the bone.
